Our Goals

  • To promote economic development.
  • To become a social services, job training, and information center for the neighborhood.
  • To help ensure that plans for area projects follow the Revitalization plan and will benefit the neighborhood.
  • To have a strong role in representing residents and business owners in promoting positive change to the neighborhood.
  • To continue to develop educational programs on our unique history and community citizenship.

Our History

In the early 1990's, our primary mission was to address the immediate physical needs of the Wood Street neighborhood such as the abandoned Kaiser Mill Complex, vacant buildings, poor street lighting, dilapidated storefronts and unsafe sidewalks. Our hard work and investments have paid off and today the neighborhood is renewed and full of vitality with a renovated mill, a reduced number of vacant buildings, new sidewalks, thirty new street lamps, and thirty-nine businesses with storefront improvement projects. Businesses receive grant monies administered through our program to pay for new signs, awnings, updated facades, - including designs, windows, doors and/or painting. Believe it or not, we are just getting started. There is still more that needs to be done!

Mosaico recognizes that revitalizing a neighborood is more than just physical improvements, it is also about the adults and youth that live, work and go to school here everyday. Eight years ago, we began to address social and economic needs by developing a communty outreach program. Programs such as the Fourth Grade "Sense of Pride" program and the "There to Care" Middle School Mentoriing Program have educated and served the needs of over 900 children and both continue to grow.

Our residents and neighbors have attended courses and workshops hosted by Mosaico such as the Power of Money, Positive Parenting, Lead Paint, Internet Safety, and Home Ownership. We have sponsored events such as the Old World Garden tour and the Inspired Places tour. We partner with other non-profits to provide additional services for our community.

In 2008, we began our efforts to pay homage to the past, present and future. Remembering and respecting Bristol's Maritime history, we developed a Job Training program in the Marine Industry for low and moderate income households. Today those efforts have expanded to include Green Technologies and Health Care, growth industries for the State of Rhode Island.
